About Us
The Alliance for Conflict Transformation (ACT) is a Cambodian NGO providing skills and knowledge in the area of conflict resolution and peacebuilding. Since 1997, we have been working alongside local women and men across social, ethnic and religious divides to develop and strengthen the mechanisms for peace in Cambodia and to help create a collective social conscience.
The ACT vision is for acceptable and positive peace in Cambodia, where basic human needs and human rights are protected and respected by every level of society. Effective social mechanisms must be strengthened so Cambodians can resolve conflicts peacefully, allowing sustained economic growth, increased political stability, and the strengthening of social fabric, which will in turn contribute to peace at a regional and global level.
ACT works with a wide group of contacts and networks in Cambodia. It is well positioned to promote peace in Cambodia as a non–political and influential organisation that has a history of working with men and women from Youth groups, Commune councils, Buddhist, Christian and Muslim groups and with small, medium, large, local and international human rights and peacebuilding NGOs. ACT also has solid peacebuilding links in South East Asia and the wider international community.
ACT strategy is to work with such groups, particularly at a grass roots level and to build their capacity to bring about a culture of dialogue, cooperation and peace in Cambodia through innovative training programmes, research, networking and education.
ACT’s core values inherent in its operations are:
- Humanity, peace and justice
- Democracy
- Non-discrimination
- Strong team spirit
- Capacity-building led by Cambodians
- Political independence
- Acting peacefully
- Transparency and accountability
Philosophy
Everything we do at ACT is motivated by a deep commitment to positive change. This change is based on four philosophical foundations:
Creative Creativity is learning from doing. With our experience spanning a spectrum of disciplines, sectors, and organisations, we examine every project with an unbiased eye and bring a fresh perspective to understanding to the issues at hand
Artistic The ability to work with, through, in and on conflicts is an art. We train ourselves on developing excellent working relationships with others, based on strong communication and a dynamic, collaborative spirit. We help people clarify their goals and formulate meaningful, measurable objectives.
Realistic When it comes time to make a choice about a particular project, our experience tells us what goals and outcomes can be realistically achieved. In all our endeavours ACT remains true to our beliefs and philosophy and we do not compromise our time, resources or energy and only devote these assets to projects we truly believe in.
Idealistic Being idealistic is an expression of emotional intelligence. The power of non-violence introduced by Mahatma Gandhi is once such example. These are values and principles that we uphold and apply in practice. As a consequence our projects aren’t static but evolve over time, with flexible yet structured and achievable idealistic aims.
